Bridge 4 – Process Documentation & Project “Memory” – August 7, 2018

  1. My neighborhood was Murray Hill. As I conducted my interviews inside the shop, the owner, Anne-Marie, stated that although the design of the shop will change in order to keep up with the newer developments and younger generation, the clock is the one thing she would never change from the shop.
  2. My research question was how do stores (specifically the barber shop) withstand the pressures of time and change and how do they adapt/reject it?
  3. My final project was a clock made out of broken pieces of alcohol bottles. I put together a rim made out of old historical pictures of Murray Hill to show how much history the clock has withstood. The previous owner, Anne Marie’s father, stated that these days, the newer residents have no respect. There is trash everywhere and the once quiet community has been ruined. The clock was purposely made out of shattered pieces and glued back together to portray the perseverance and strength of the barber shop. Although the decor may change, the memories and history will always be there. To compliment the piece, I included two portraits of the barber shop in the 1900’s when it first opened, and the barber shop today to highlight the contrast/comparison between the different times.
