Artist Design Statement

I like to think that I do not have a set style—I am very much exploring at the moment and the one aspect of my design work that I can comfortably state, is that I enjoy crossing into different design worlds. Product design was a refreshing world to enter into mainly because it has no walls and therefore no confinement. There was a moment in my schooling where I was very focused on trying to solidify a set style or brand—quickly realizing that whilst in this search I was harming my growth as a designer. And evidently enough, my work reflected this struggle, by seeming a bit lost and a tad empty.

And so, my projects started shifted from being focused around portraying a certain look, to becoming pulled into the narrative rather than the actual design outcome. I find emotional connection to objects very fascinating, so started to shift into this direction. My work is centered around observing—the way people choose to fill a space, or why they gravitate towards curves rather than straight lines. Through these observations, forms and colors start to appear and from there, the design will slowly starts to reveal itself.

Material and color many times drive my designs. An unusual form, featured in an odd color, and made from a fun material is very much my idea of an enjoyable design piece. I like to think that my designs trigger happiness and playfulness—that they are light and are successful in unearthing our inner goofiness. A goofy exterior with a very deep narrative is how I like the structure my designs. A paradoxical puzzle piece waiting to be unraveled.
