Black Fashion Designers exhibition at FIT

In the picture, there is a black dummy model have a lovely dress on it. The top of the dress is in pale pinkish purple color, with a magazine pattern on it. In the magazine pattern, a black sexy model, wearing a number ten t-shirt, smile lovely. The title of the magazine is called “Drum”. Before the 1960s, the black models were not been accepted by the most of the people, however, after the Civil Rights Movement, people realized and accepted the identity and the beauty of the black models. This dress can represent the activism of black communities. Black designers like to use fashion as a way to speak out the racial issues. They uses their traditional fabric, such as the bottom of the dress in the picture. There are some beads and paillette on the folding skirt, which reflect their traditional textiles. The black designer also added the black line in the colorful line on the bottom edge of the dress to show their status. Willi Smith said, “When the hype was over, people thought there were no more black designers. In a way it’s a blessing. Now we can get on with being what we are: designers.” In my opinion, this dress is telling people that it was designed by a black designer. It not only a dress, but also carries the hope and voice of the black designers. The black designers use their object, their designs, to tell the world their rallying cry “Black is Beautiful”.
