Sea Urchin

The way Chang-Rae Lee chose to end his essay “Sea Urchin” really stood out to me. To me, this essay is about self discovery, and in the beginning Lee seems unsure of himself as if he doesn’t know what he wants. In the end of the essay he goes back to eat more of the thing that makes him so sick. What I really like is the line of dialogue that we get from the woman working: “I know what you want.” It’s a really powerful and simple line that acts as a sort of encouragement and confirmation that he’s doing the right thing. Following the dialogue, Chang-Rae Lee shares that his mouth “slick with anticipation” and for the first time he has a grasp on what he really wants.
