The Eye of the Flâneur

Traveline is a project that I have developed throughout my dérive in Passage Vivienne. When I think of a map I often think of line, and as I explored the passage, I noticed that line played a major role within it as well. The piece of work, in fact, revolves around the concept of line, travel, and direction. It was initially only a composition of multiple images shot in Passage Vivienne and placed side by side where they had something in common. I believe each image individually has no true meaning, but as soon as it becomes part of a larger entity and as soon as it is connected to other photographs shot in its same place of origin, it gains a more distinct identity. Inspired by the visit at the Palais de Tokyo of the Dioramas exhibition, I later decided to develop my piece of work and make it into a video. In the Dioramas exhibition, light has a major importance, as it gives movement, depth, and notability to each artwork. I, therefore, delved into this ideology, and, through the use of light, I gave life to the original photograph. Moreover, my final project is in black and white to merge the pictures together and avoid for the observers to be distracted by color.
Furthermore, I included a video I shot during my stay in Passage Vivienne, as I was inspired by it throughout the evolution of my final piece of work. I was fascinated by how, in the video, everything is still except for the people and the chandelier; and I decided to create this contrast within my project as well. My piece of work, in fact, is composed of two significant elements: still photographs and a moving light. As I believe sound affects the impression of a work of art, I added the sound of thunder and rain to my final piece. Science has shown that the sound of rain relaxes and calms down the human being, and this is the reason I included it in my final project. The dérive is meant to free us all from constraints, worries, and anxiety, and I believe the action of ‘drifting away’ has to be accompanied by a harmony that helps suppress these feelings.
