For this project we were given a two minute time constraint, while keeping the project similar to our previous ones.

In a group of 4 we decided to tackle the ideas of pollution, depletion, and over consumption especially with single use products. To combine the themes of each previous project, we also decided to include overtones of suspense and tension. To accomplish this we will be creating a two minute film, alternating between two shots.

The scene will be set in a bathtub, with the water slowly rising with each cut, and slowly drowning the subject. The water will be covered with a layer of cigarette butts to symbolize both pollution over taking aquatic life, and the throw away, consumerist society that we live in. The other shot will be a close up of a cigarette burning up, stressing the idea of time running out. Sound will be overlayed in a suspenseful manner.

For this project I researched various artists who tackle social problems one named Martha Rosler who works with very political situations and spreads awareness about them, while her work was criticized in the beginning, she is now praised and seen as the backdrop of many movements.Through her work, she adopts scathing and critical positions against the Vietnam war and on feminism. The other is Marina DeBris, who is an Australian artist. When she relocated to Venice, she was struck by the condition of the local beaches. Every day she has been running on the beach and collecting trash. At first this was simply an effort to help clean up, but soon realized this was not addressing the problem. She is known for her collection named “Trashion” which she makes using only trash she finds washed up on beaches, she finds everything from cans to beanbags. She tries to shock viewers by such creations.

Some of our inspiration for the project was drawn from horror films. Bath tubs are a common motif in horror films because of the  vulnerability, as well as silence and suspense. We  hoped to take these two  elements to elevate the project. We also drew inspiration from some photography from illustrator Antonio  Lopez for the angles and shots.

Pictured above was our planning for  the roles of each member in the group as well as a storyboard for what we were going to do. However in the end we all worked on everything as a group and merged our skills.
