Day 7

We had a very full day in the studio today. The main focus was the study of values as a graphic way to represent light and shadow.

We started by studying some drawings by French artist Seurat and learned to identify the different values in his drawings, from the lightest part of the images to the darkest.

Students then practiced cross hatching to create different levels of grey on the paper. Then they drew a still life made out of white boxes and applied their new cross hatching skills. The drawings were impressive. A sense of composition is starting to emerged.

After lunch we had a male model, Miguel, a dancer, who paused for us. We started drawing light and shadows with white and black comté crayons on grey paper. Later, we experimented with ink and large brushes, drawing very loosely.

Students drawings are shifting, they are gaining confidence and finding new ways of observing the world.
