The Lampshade- Process

The Object that I chose as inspiration for my object was a Christian Dior lipstick. I specifically used the horizontal and vertical motifs bellow the cap because I thought that this was the most interesting part of the object and thought that it greatly contributed to its elegance.

I had a few ideas on how I would incorporate the design. My first choice was to make a jewellery rack using the line aspect of the lipstick’s design as a way to hold jewellery.

This idea was looking more towards the technical aspect of the lipstick with its ability to turn and form a spiral in order to make the color go up from the inside of the case. This idea was meant to be a cooler for four champaign glasses at a party, in which you would then use a mechanism that would push them out of the cooler ti be served. The idea was that this container could hold ice and have different sockets to put the glasses in. I thought that there would be a clicker to keep the base elevated. The idea was to have the inside be metal and the outside leather or wood.

These were more simple ideas that incorporated the rectangular shape of the design on top of the horizontal and vertical lines making triangle like shapes. These were simply pots for pencils and flowers.

I chose to do the lampshade because it was the most interesting to me and a way in which I could incorporate as much of my own patterns and designs. Initially I wanted to make each side of the lampshade covered in fabric but I thought that this was not original enough so in the end I made triangular shapes with colored embroidery thread so that wen the lightbulb was on, the lines from the thread for reflect on the wall.

I chose to put fabric on the top of the lampshade to create an aesthetic balance and to hide the lightbulb. The fabric does not stretch far so it would be best to use a small lightbulb to make sure it is covered. The embroidery thread I thought would give the lampshade a more colourful aspect while being more discrete in the design. The glue gun was the strongest substance that I could find in order to properly attach the sticks together. I chose the sticks because they were quite strong. The fabric I chose because it was a little see through to make the light shine through a little bit so that the light would not be completely blocked off. It was also the easiest fabric to thread because of the small holes.

I used the threads to create the interesting light reflection and to hold together the structure while not disturbing the aesthetic. The end result from the colorful thread was interesting and made the structure unique and more textured. I used the glue gun to put together the sticks.

The two final materials that I found were the light bulb socket and a ribbon which I cut in half and used to attack the socket.
