Sustainable System Project process

Project 1-Bioswales and Tree Pits
-In New York City especially in Manhattan, we can see a lot of tree pits. Tree pits basically is a fence cover around trees and flowers and the soils storms water when it comes to rains. The bioswale is similar but different than the tree pits. Bioswale is larger than the tree pits and contains more flowers, trees, and absorb more waters from the rains. However, bioswale appears mostly in Brooklynn, Queens, and Bronx, but not in Manhattan. The main reason we want to work on this project is to see how the tree pits and bioswales benefit the city and change the city. We break to five parts, history, comparison, location, the effect of the bioswales, future solutions, and bioswale experiment. At first, the bioswales only demonstrate in the neighbourhood areas and this is part of the overall adaptive management approach. After seeing the success of the experiment, NYC expands the number of bioswales to all the locations in Brooklyn, Queens and Bronx. Sustainability: support present & future generations and maintain the condition of the city. The goal is to use water as a resource rather than a waste, build the project capture the rainwater as soon as it hits the impervious area. Not only absorb water, but also enhance local quality of life by beautifying the city and improving city waterways. The effect of bioswales improve water quality, increase infiltration rates, reduces the stormwater runoff and increase biodiversity.

Project 2-Ramen & Dumpling poster
-For this project, we choose ramen and dumpling as the comparison of how the product produced, where they produced, where they sell the product, and where to recycle these. The ramen we chose to do is a Korean ramen, it is called hot chicken flavour ramen. The making of the ramen involves water, flour, sugar, and red pepper. After the product done they will be shifter from Korean to America, and directly to the H mart which is an Asian supermarket. In the end, we listed a few things about how to deal with leftover food and where the leftover goes. The ingredients of the making of dumpling we chose to use local products. The flour, pork, and cabbage we all chose to use local food (we find sources and local food website to support our idea). Aside from the poster we listed thing of the explanation of distribution, how long should you refrigerate food, and how long can you keep leftover in the freezer. And here are our two posters.

Project 3-Frustration-Free Packaging
-At first, we are aiming to come up with an idea that would change the packaging system for online shopping websites. Since there involves transportation management control, it is hard to change the packaging. However, we find out that Amazon has this packaging called Frustration-Free Packaging, it is easier to open and also saved a lot of papers. So our goal shifts to promote the use of Frustration-Free Packaging. The first page we will address the issue: current situation- Online sales are predicted to double—to around 25 per cent of U.S. retail sales within the next decade—and that translates into a literal mountain of cardboard, as well as emissions from freight services. Therefore we need to make a change where people should pay attention to the issue of over packaging. Also, after realizing the problem, more of us should know there is a good method that already exists to alleviate this issue – Frustration-Free Packaging. Our goal is to let more people know about Frustration-Free Packaging since only when the group is big enough, can the change be made. And our method: More and more people nowadays are using social media. A good way of letting people know the information is to put it where people stay the most frequently. Hence, we decided to put up a poster on Instagram and Facebook as a form of advertisement, so when people scrolling it will pop up.

(Sunny as S and Camila as C) (please ignore the date I said in the audio it was incorrect)

S: Hi, this is Sunny, l am 19 years old, today is March 9th and now l am speaking with Camila who is my friend and we’re recording this in new york city, NewYork.

S: So Camila how you like this dish we have today?

C: This is one of my favorite place and l love to order ceviche here, it is very similar to the Peru one, ceviche is my favorite dish and l always eat it since l was little and l really like to eat this in new york.

S: So is it similar to the one you have in your hometown?

C: Yes, all over South America they have ceviche and each country have their own style of ceviche. For example, the one we have right now is Peruvian style of ceviche and they have avocado, crunchy popcorn, and Ecuadorian doesn’t have either of these things. But it is similar.

S: So is it just a few ingredients are different?

C: Yes, little things like the popcorn, avocado, and tomato.

S: Besides the ceviche, have you tried other dishes on the menu?

C: Yes, l have tried their drink and it also tastes similar to the Ecuadorian drinks.

S: What are the ingredients that make this drink?

C: It is made of corn.

S: Made of corn? l have this right now but l couldn’t taste any of the corn flavors.

C: It is purple corn.

S: Wow nice

C: Yeah it is a drink made from the purple corn.

S: What else have you tried on the menu?

C: I’ve tried almost everything.

S: The beef one? and the rice ball?

C: No no

S: you haven’t tried the rice ball yet?

C: No l have not tried the rice ball

S: l really enjoy my seafood mixto.

C: Yeah it is nice to have like a restaurant that relates to the one back home, it’s not completely the same cause in Ecuador and Peru they have different ingredient and for the seafood, they take out right away from the ocean so it is very fresh and some ingredients only produces in Peru and Ecuador. But overall it is similar to the one l have back home.

S: So the seafood dishes in your hometown is very fresh?

C: Yes it is very fresh. There is a popular restaurant that is built on the top of the sea so you can see how they catch the seafood.

S: That is really nice. l like how they designed this little counter and everything makes me feel like l am at the beachside. Anyway, thank you, Camila, for this interview.

C: Thank you Sunny.

Interview 2

(Sunny as S and Aya as A) (please ignore the date I said in the audio it was incorrect)

S: Hi, this is Sunny, l am 19 years old, today is March 11th and now l am speaking with Aya who is my friend and we’re recording this in new york city, NewYork.

S: Okay Aya, how do you like the meal you just had in the Hi-Collar restaurant?

A: It was amazing and worth it every penny.

S: What do you think about the omelet rice?

A: Th eggs were so creamy and rice seasoned perfectly

S: Does it taste like the one you have in your hometown?

A: Definitely, except the price is a bit expensive

S: What’s the average price for the omelet rice in Japan converted to dollars?

A: About 6-7 dollars

S: Wow, is the same amount?

A: Yes it is the same amount of food

S: Really?

A: Yeah everything is so cheap and good in Japan

S: But besides the price, the quality is definitely tasted the same right?

A: Yeah the quality it tastes

the same.

S: How do you like this restaurant’s interior design? Does it make you feel like you are in Japan right now?

A: Yeah, it is a little bit European style but in a Japanese way. like the little details really remind me of Japanese culture. the floor was a lot cleaner in Japan and the one we went was a bit dirty. but what do you expect from new york?

S: Did you noticed the coffee cup? l thought it was very pretty and delicate. l has never seen that kind of cup in other restaurants. l think they very focused on the furniture, like gold mettle tables and makes you feel like more modern vibe.

A: Definitely the design was great. l noticed the little matches box on the top of the shelve. I think its so cute

S: Isn’t that from different cities?

A: l don’t know actually, but I think is more vintage?

S: Yeah you can tell from the pictures, like travel pictures l can even see some Muji mountain picture as the background. it really brings you a vintage vibe and makes you feel like you are in Japan. l really like that restaurant

A: Me too! it was expensive to me but still worth it.

S: Would you recommend that restaurant to your other friends and families?

A: Definitely! l will go there again.

S: Nice. so the last question, next time what would you order from the menu beside the omelet rice?

A: I’ve seen some people ordered desserts, so l think I’ll order dessert next time.

S: Oh my god the “hot cake”!

A: Yep the “hot cake” and the guy sat next to you were eating mochi and that looks good too.

S: l saw that hot cake was really puffy and filled with syrup.

A: Yeah that kind of pancake is very popular in Japan.

S: Especially in Tokyo l think Tokyo is more like a modern city but somehow mix with a sense of traditional feel and l think that restaurant is really nailed it on both parts of the food and the interior design. Like the “hot cake” is actually the pancake in America. where “hot cake” is puff like an actual cake and pancake is flat and dense. Thank you for the interview aya!

A: Yeah of course

The Feminist Pro-Choice Movement

Last year’s Women’s March filling Washington D.C and many other cities with streams of pink hats and feminist placard, launched an important discussion about the place of pro-life and conservative women in the movement after multiple women’s groups opposing abortion were barred from officially participating. The issue proved sadly universal; the #MeToo movement prompted stories from “liberal” Hollywood to conservative Fox News, from “secular” Silicon Valley to Christian congregations. The shared concern over abuse at the hands of men in power, now discussed with more openness and urgency, seems to have the potential to bring women together. The prevalence of sexual misconduct and harassment has an effect on abortion as well. So often, women are coerced by unsupportive fathers of the child, family, or a lack of support by employers or school administrators, but we can unite to change that.
