De-constructing a Monument

Artist Statement:

This piece is called ‘The Seduction’, deprived from the Gianni Versace’s life maxim of Medusa. This sculpture includes the memorial portrait of him and the snake of medusa coming out of portrait which has Versace’s symbolic texture rather than original snake skin. In terms of Medusa which he got inspired of, I thought Versace had made designs that wait for the wearer to challenge themselves and this phenomenon integrate with Gianni’s desire.

There is a famous quote he said in his lifetime, “That is the key of this collection, being yourself. Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way to live.” He wanted everyone to be confident to their conviction and I thought he successfully achieved as a beloved diligent designer whom fascinated people by his confidence of designs. Therefore, I chose to put on aggressive snake coming out of his portrait to raise others’ awareness that you can also make up yourself and express boldly like Gianni Versace.

This piece is made as a trick art of optical illusion by using photoshop and illustrator. Gianni was an active and friendly person that wanted to maintain the succeed as a designer. Therefore, trick are piece will commemorate him including his luxurious and friendly features. And also as real museum of trick arts his fans could take pictures in front of it.

Casting Project & Architectural Drawing

<SOCIAL-ECOLOGICAL SPACE>

Interconnected Spaces

  1. Field Trip to Middle Town, Manhattan
  2. Studying of Multi View Drawing.
  3. Sketching & Making one side of the sketch in  5″x5″x1″ size
  4. Final Project
  5. Paraline Drawing

Artist Statement:

This sculpture for casting project, has a dominant volume with a subordinate volume offset at the top. Also a negative space cut out by cantilever adds aesthetic sense to it. At first, I imagined of vast plain that has the sole building receiving sunshine in order to look like a peaceful and restful atmosphere. So I designed a negative space from top to bottom letting the light penetrate through so that the shadows are made by stages. From the field trip and the study in class, I had changed my perspective of space. In the past, I thought space was defined as physical space that is calculated by distance or area. However, I realized that space has the power of making and developing the society. By molding and sketching the space I wanted to make, I concentrated on creating projection of my vision on society.

Polyhedron Sculpture

<INHABITED SPACE>

Inside/Outside Relationships

Volume and Mass

  1. Research regular polyhedrons also known as the Platonic solids and analyze the patterns and geometry that compose them.Study these regular polyhedrons through technical drawings and paper models.
  2. Make own polyhedron.

    3. Make a polyhedron that opens and or transforms to express space/volume in a visually interesting way.   Research and apply a proportional system such as the Golden Section in the work. Explore thin, planar materials with strong connections.

-Must use at least two of these materials: Wood, Metal, and Plastic

    Artist Statement:

This is a sculpture shaped with various polyhedrons, uses of woods, plastic, and metal sheets. For the body, I made a negative space for the dominant volume and four sides are all shaped in octagon. To make the shape of octagons, I had drilled each ends with the smallest drill bit and attached both ends with two little cylinder wires. For the upper part, I wanted to make reflective effects that also can show the volume filled with reflected parallelogram prisms. To make it more vibrant and playful, I painted with range of red acrylic paints. In order to make this range, I used color theory by putting proper amounts of white and black into red. At last, I hung them on wood stand to make them look like a mobile. In between the procedures, I had difficulties making the attachments especially the metal sheets. So I had to use glue in several places and this made me bothered overall for the clear appearance.

Analysis and Interpretation of Form in Space

Introduction:

Making a three dimensional linear construction that explores the relationship between two dimensional and three-dimensional of form.

” How drawn line and linear materials are the same but different? “

Use of framing in a drawing to accentuate positive/negative relationships and most importantly the nature of perception.

Artist Statement:

By observing the lively appearance of Union Square, I made quick gesture drawings of trees, a boy walking through holding a  bicycle, and a squirrel. For this project, I wanted to make the bottom parts with wood to let wire pieces stand in a three-dimensional way. Making the wire pieces, I had used three kinds of wires. One was for the outlines, the thinner one was for attachment, and colored wire wool for tree leaves and flowers. When making the details of gestures, I struggled to curve clearly with pliers in a right way and had to roll up several times to make it still together. For the wooden part, I cut the appropriate angle of diagonal wood so that I could drive the nails clearly. The parts I regret after all were that the parts I made it stand are kind of distracting and I should have challenged more on three-dimensional positions by making more realistic figures and different stages of wooden pieces.

Preliminary Research Post

“I am not interested in the past, except as the road to the future.” This is a quote from Gianni Versace, died July 15, 1997, Italian fashion designer known for Brand called Versace and his daring fashions. For this project, I searched for different things in his arts, design, humanities and the message to us.

This is the  4 potential/preliminary research questions  about Versace:

  1. How did he get all Inspiration of the design?
  2. What was his best advertisement for a brand?
  3. What is the most emblematic design of the brand? And how did they effect?
  4. What was the great achievement he did after launching the brand?

Multiple Perspectives – Map-making

ARTIST STATEMENT

When people talk about New York City, you can never forget the old historical buildings and tall skyscrapers. Our project, One New York, focuses on the architectural part of the Lower Manhattan. We planned out the shape of the route before hand, which was shape of “1”. Realizing the size and overwhelming feeling of the skyscrapers and aesthetic old antique buildings, we decided to make a psychogeographic map of our route mainly based with architectural designs. Since the skyscrapers are huge, we decided to make a big size sculpture to give the overwhelming feeling to the viewers. The buildings are drawn with pencils and with architectural drawing style. Since there were many pop up cards in Lower Manhattan, we made the drawing to be pop up. The “1” is made with cardboard and painted with simmer gray acrylic paint to show the dullness of the lower/ middle Manhattan and the bottom “_” part is made with plexi glass since there were many skyscrapers which are made with glass windows. Over the window, are fire exit staircase, a very iconic image of Soho houses. It is made out of metal wire to creat a realistic feeling of the stairs.

Int.Seminar_Multiple Perspectives Map

For Bridge Project 3 – Multiple Perspectives Map, we made a map by addressing a single topic from many points of view. This was based on articles “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” and “Is Facebook Making Us Lonely?”. We visualized the comparison of opinions into seesaw and  emoticons. The article,”Is Google Making Us Stupid?” is about research and opinions to various aspects of  both psychological and working process. Similar but different, the article, “Is Facebook Making Us Lonely?” is more focused on the effects on our psychological relationship with Social Networking Service.

Self Reflection:

  • When you reflect on Bridge 3, are your thoughts overall positive or negative? Why?

I’m neutral about it. I learned how to analyze articles and shared opinions with peers. However, two articles had different atmosphere(theme) about the Internet. So I thought there weren’t many of common points.

  • What is the most interesting discovery you made while working on this project? (about the project, about yourself, about your group members, etc.)

About the project, I discovered that there can be lot of points and aspects in one article. And in the process of paraphrasing into our words and making it as a visual expression, we needed many communications together.

  • What were some of the most challenging moments and what made them challenging?

Getting into the concept of the map was challenging. Because we had to contrast and bring into a comparison map. Also, the opinions in the articles were abstract and literally written, we had to make an emotion pictures to describe that sentences in recognizable senses.

Phycho-geography_group work

Psycho-geographic map of Union Square

We had journey in Union Square and recorded sight, smell, touch, sound.

Then we shaped the route we went with sound waves.

Sound waves show the vibrancy of sound as we walk.

And we divided into several parts to show close look to each parts.

We attached pictures and sound of that moments and explained the experiences.

I got up at 10:30 to take a shower and prepared to go to school. It was raining hard outside so I felt that today won’t be an easy day. Then I arrived at time in class for space & materiality and professor let us do own work for 3 hours. So I headed to Blick to buy shining metal for my project. Then went to workplace and tried to cut the wood. I got caution from the officer that I am working with the tool too hazardous. After getting my things done for today, I went up to the class and class ended. Then I went to Stuy dorm because I had 4 hours left before the seminar class starts. I ate and ate and ate with Hyo-Jin. And we came to class with some guilty mind that we ate too much.
