Photo Blog Inspiration

from National Geographic Instagram

This is an image from National Geographic’s Instagram. This account serves as wonderful inspiration for the ongoing photo blog assignment, and this image in particular responds to the Week 1 theme of memory. The caption for the image reflects on the intersection of remembrance and observation:

“Today is the United Nations-designated International Holocaust Remembrance Day, falling on the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland. The Holocaust Memorial in Berlin, designed by architect Peter Eisenman and engineer Bureau Happold is officially known as the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. It is a city block filling maze of solid grey sarcophagi where visitors can find themselves sunk into lifeless canyons of grief. There, at night, streaks of light illustrate the ghosts of the past.”
