Integrative Seminar 2: Research Post

Theme: Voice for the Voiceless

Chosen Topic:
Victims of Child Sex Trafficking in the United States

Main research question:
Why are children trafficked for sex in the United States?

Working Thesis Statement:
In the United States, children are trafficked for sex because their families are desperate to make money. Also, many adults are not connected to their pain, which perpetuates the abuse of children and solidifies the existence of sex trafficking networks.

Refined Thesis Statement:

Children are trafficked by men and women who are not aware of or in touch with the pain of the abuse they suffered as children. They unknowingly perpetuate further cycles of abuse by harming other children and selling them for sex.

Hunch responses to my research question:

  • What I already know: Children are trafficked for sex so their families can make money. Children are also trafficked for sex because they are vulnerable, trusting, and cannot fight back.
  • What I believe: Children are trafficked for sex because adults who abuse them are not connected to their own pain. If they were connected to their own pain, they would not be able to abuse children in this way. Children are also trafficked for sex because there is a large segment of the population who perpetuate cycles of abuse and sex crimes with children. They do this because they, too, were abused as children.
  • What emotions I feel when I think about this question: I feel anger, helplessness, and sadness.
  • What I’m unsure about: I don’t know enough about the psychological conditions of men (and women) who traffic children. I don’t understand how, in their hearts, they can commit such an awful crime.
