The real cost

The Real Cost of the Fashion Industry

The Fast Fashion Industry, that includes large brands like H&M or Zara, produce tons of clothing each year. Several issues arise from this production, including work conditions, pollution or even the spread of diseases. Most clients are unaware of the covered downsides of the industry or perhaps choose to cover their eyes to them. But through this project, Eva and I aimed to display 4 pieces that on the inside are a graphic representation of this issues. We manipulated the pieces with different materials, like through burning or painting, to reflect pollution, oil spills, workers shameful conditions… As well as each t-shirt displaying the unknown terrors of the industry, we created accompanying tags that on the inside each have a fact about fast fashion. Ideally, the t-shirt and tag would be displayed as a movement in fast fashion brand stores, and taking pictures of the shirt along other clothes and posting them with a hashtag (where people are invited to make their own and dare to go to the store and make the statement). Or perhaps the tags we created could be pasted to normal t-shirts that are sold by these brands, to make people double-think whether it is worth buying the piece.

As you can already guess, my name is Oihana. I will be sharing my work during my first year as an Art student at Parsons Paris. Hope you enjoy it!
