Individual Prototypes

We explored Pollock’s dripping and pouring method individually, experimenting with different media such as acrylic, gouache and ink.

Group Prototypes

We tried to paint as a whole on an A3-sized paper. As the five of us were working on such a small area, our movements were quite restricted. Yet, it was interesting to explore Pollock’s technique as a group, it was a fun process.

For our first group prototype, we painted on one single canvas together. Everyone was engaged and the piece turned out really strong as the layering of ink and acrylics were really intense.

We tried another painting method by separating the paper into sections with each of us being in charge of one. We layered the paint individually with our own methods while referencing to Pollock’s piece. Although the outcome of the piece does not look as if it was divided, this painting method was not ideal as the process was not as engaging.

Final Process

It was difficult to throw paint in a restricted area, therefore we went to Petit Ceinture which is an abandoned railway in Paris. Although we had some difficulties reaching the place, it was worth the climb as the vibe and atmosphere were great for us to paint.

Final Outcome:

The final outcome of the composition may have looked different from Pollock’s Autumn Rhythm as the compositional elements are more intense. Since Pollock listens to jazz music while he paints, the melody of the music must have influenced his painting in some way. However, instead of listening to jazz music like Pollock did, we listened to hip-hop music, hence it also influenced our emotions and movements in a different way. Nonetheless, we are very satisfied with the results.

Reflection:

We worked great as a group because we were all very excited about the project and could not wait for the outcome. Throwing paint around while listening to music and drinking was a lot of fun on its own, so much that we even decided to throw it at each other.  The adventurous way to the Petit Ceinture and protecting the painting made it even more exciting, such as being at this amazing place. As we invested so much time and money into it, it felt extremely rewarding to finally see the outcome and we are all very proud of how it turned out.
