Circle Line Trip and Final Project works-in-progress

-Compared to what you saw when walking, what can you see and sense from the boat?

The whole city is more completed and my view is more general. I can see the city as an entirety. The buildings are gathered and some parts of city lacks of high buildings. The city’s edges which is river are rare to see for me.

– What areas appear to be vulnerable to coastal flooding?

Lower part of downtown and riversides are vulnerable. There is no specific protection between water and buildings all along the riverside. Some of the space besides water is open, which will be dangerous. The water level looks close to the land. If there is a hurricane, it can be higher in a very short time.

– Are any effects of Hurricane Sandy visible?

Personally i didn’t find any effects by seeing on the boat.

– Are you able to determine which areas of the coast are built on landfill? If so, what clues made this possible?

The parts which are lower and have fewer high buildings may be built. They may not afford such huge weight on a small part of land.

– Do you see sea walls, reinforcements, marsh areas?

There are some walls, but i didn’t see any marsh areas.

– What kind of systems do you see interacting (people, water, boats, etc)?

Transportation, people, natural and the city all work together to build a huge system. The boat we were on and other boats contains human or objects are all over the water, worked for this city’s touring and producing. The waste factory is involving people, water, electricity and other elements as a part of the environment recycle.

– Does New York seem prepared for the next storm?

If there will be a storm, New York must be much better than last time. From the reading last week I also learn a lot about how this city improved in this aspect. However, I still think it has many places need to be fixed or improved. Especially the subway system, actually I didn’t see the outcome the reading is mentioned.

Work in process

I’m doing patterns. There will be 10 pieces of pattern:

1.scarf(center folded)

2.pocket(back piece&front piece)x2

3.hoddie x2

4.back piede x2

5.yolk x2

6.pocket on back

I found 2 pieces of old fabric I have, which are in black and dark grey. They are both knit. I think the color fit each other and the material is good for making the scarf and pockets part. Knit is soft and stretchy, which is great to wrap around the neck. For the hoodie and back part, I planed to buy nylon and poly blended fabric (black). The whole color pallet will be back and grey.

During the pattern making, I changed some part of the design. For example, I reduced the elastic go all around the hoodie, but add a piece of yolk and a piece of fabric go in front of the neck to make sure it can stay on head better.

Here is Yuzhou Lou's Blog. I will share some notes of courses, reading and personal work in my daily life. You can also call me Jen. I am from Shanghai, China. Now I live in new York, USA. I am studying at Parsons, the New school for Design as a freshman. My major in the further will be Fashion Design. Dark colors are my favorite. I like Lolita Fashion, Traditional Asian style and wedding dresses. Also, I prefer a few of gothic and punk elements. Design is part of lives. This is one thing I believe. It doesn't matter how old you are or what job do you do. Design is a style of living. Keep having day dreams. That's the way to make people create new things.
