[LS] INT. SEM 2: CONST ENV- Invented Space

  (World dominated  by Small People)

  1. The Gulliver’s Travel

   Lilliput is the name for the small people kingdom in the Gulliver’s Travel.The small people lives in a world exists on the earth but far away from the urban cities. It is dominated by an arrogant and conceited king who is no differences than his citizens but prefers to control power intensively. His chaotic way of managing the country frequently causes fights not only within the country but also with nearby countries. Little people who domain the environment is vigilant about invaders. When Gulliver firstly enters their dominant, those tiny people ties him up and treat him badly. And the purpose for author to create such a environment was to ironically metaphor the atrocities of England government who controls the power.

  2. Alice in Wonderland

  Another story that also contains an arrogant leader within the small people’s world is Alice in Wonderland. The the Red Queen treats other creatures living in the environment brutally. In fact, the author also uses the book to show the eager toward democracy. Unlike the world in the Gulliver’s Travel, the world underground contains magic so Alice gains the power of adjusting her body size when she entered the space. Importantly, the Cheshire cat is the magic animal that acts through the whole story he is also a sign for Alice to keep going finding her way back home.

  3. The Thumbelina

  Similar with the Cheshire cat in Alice in Wonderland, the swallow in the story of Thumbelina also acts as a sign in the environment to a better place. When the Thumbelina meets difficulties in mole’s house, the swallow lead the path to her and takes her to where she belongs. The author Andersen entrusted the whole environment surround the Thumbelina with magic. The space Thumbelina stays is more close to nature. She has lots of interactions with animals among the world she lives in.

  4. Shan Hai Jing

  Shan Hai Jing, an Accent Chinese book describing different strange situations also introduced a group of little people lives in a nature environment where interact with animals around them. Small people in Shanghai Jing lives in group inside the body of a bird. The same as Gulliver’s Travels, there is a invader in their living environment who kills the bird(small people’s inhabitant) and causes them do not have any protections.

  5. The Borrower Arrietty

 

  The Borrower Arrietty is a cartoon drew by a Japanese illustrator. In the story, the small people Arrietty and her family is live under the floor of a house with human. They are categorized as endangered creatures. Similar with the Chinese accent story Shan Hai Jing, the colonies for Arrietty’s family is in high risk of being destroyed. The aunt of the boy who lives in the house wants to use those little people to gain reputations and benefits. The cartoon was adapted from Mary Norton’s novel The Borrowers and published in 2010, the illustrator wants to use this cartoon to show how people treat environment right now and evokes people’s respect to nature.

 6.Yunnan Province, China

  The situation of small people living with normal sized human closely happens in reality. In Yunnan Province, China, the business man build a colony for dwarfs across the country to live in and let them perform to tourists to gain profits. The environment they live in is man made with cement and stones  customized by dwarfs’ body size. There are hardly and plants in that space because the business man wants to use the space more efficiently.The whole space is being highly protected because for business reason, people want to create a “colony of dwarfs”.

 7. Germany

  Recently in Germany, a group of model enthusiasts built a world for tiny model people. Buildings and facilities on this project are all man made to fit the actual size of model people. The scene there is the same as the actual environment we live in each day. The small scaled environment imitates landmarks around the world and it is set more for aesthetics meaning rather than functional.

 8. Liao Zhai

 

  Liao Zhai is an ancient Chinese ghost story talks about different spaces that does not exist. It includes a story talking about the world of small people domain in the human body. The world of small people in Liao Zhai locates in the eyes of human and the small people is actually appear in pares. The are written as in the pupils of the host. The environment small people lives is entirely control by them and sometimes they even causes serious problems to their host. Although the whole story is based on imagination, but the author connected small people’s world with human body so closely in order to warn people live in that people should treat each other with the same.
