INVENTED FORM (Eric Cheng)

INVENTED FORM-Object 2:A wearable element

Project Description: Bridge project 2 attempts t move from material experimentation towards insight into larger potential design problems that might be addressed. Rather than starting at the outset with the design a predetermined form, this process ask you to question what the potential opportunities the material may offer. You are tasked with harnessing the properties of the material palettes and the propose potential application of the material, looking beyond the obvious, common interpretation.

Object 1: A Wearable Element

Melted sugar is an object that has the characteristic of glass but looks more close to nature. The key for wearable element is that it needs to perfectly fit the structure of human so that it can achieve both functional and beauty. The whole design piece is made of white sugar and connected by glass glue. By shaping each individual melted sugar piece manually, this wearable element can perfectly fit the head of human and is given a sense of combination of human and nature. Flowers on the head represent water lotus and the round shapes on the face are cobblestones. Sugar drops on the top of the head makes the whole piece more dynamic.

Mixing sugar with a specific amount of water within a spoon. Heating the spoon on fire and keep mixing while the spoon is heated until the sugar water turns yellow. The raw material is ready when the sugar water turns both yellow and stringy. Pouring the melted sugar on a flat surface and wait for about thirty seconds until it half dry. Using a clean knife to cut the sugar out of the flat surface and shape the piece before the sugar gets cold.

To make the dynamic shape on the top of the head, covering the foam head with aluminum foil for at least three layers prevent the foam from melting. Using the same process melting the white sugar and pour the melted sugar on the top of the foam head. Repeating the process for three times until a dynamic shape appears. Remove the cold sugar from the aluminum foil and get the dynamic shape of the top of the head.

Each flower contains stamen, which is also done by melted sugar to make the whole piece more vivid.
