Assignment #14 : Polyhedron

Assignment #14 : Polyhedron

For this assignment, we were asked to produce a polyhedron using the laser cutting technique.  I chose to use two different colors plexiglass because the pattern I etched on the surface is a fire emoji since I was inspired by a candle holder.

My inspiration:

Final Work

I wasn’t very satisfied with this because I didn’t measure it correctly so the top of the design did not fit.

Assignment # 13- Foam board 3D Structure

Assignment # 13- Foam board 3D Structure

For this assignment, we are asked to make our own 3D design using foam board. For this piece, I wasn’t inspired by any artists, therefore this is my own idea. I wanted to create an artwork that looks very dynamic and I thought that using circular shapes will be a good way to show movement. I cut out circles in different sizes to show variation and create the dynamic look, I was struggling a lot when I tried to attach these circles to the base. I couldn’t use toothpicks because I didn’t have them and couldn’t find them in CVS. Therefore I just used the materials that I had, which is wires, I slid the wire into the foam board quite deeply so it would be strong enough to support the weight of the foam board when I attached it to the base. However, it still didn’t work out, the foam board kept on moving around, which means I had to find a new solution. Thus, I did more experiments and finally came up with the idea of cutting the bottom of the circle into a T shape match it with the base.

All of the cutting processes are done with a X-acto knife because it allows me to make the cuts more precise in my opinion.

Assignment 12: Video reflection

Assignment 12: Video Reflection

Prototype: The Making Of | Channel 4

The essence of this video is not only about the innovation of prosthetic and how it helps to improve the life for disabled individuals, but also about how disabled women could be confident and beautiful too. I thought that this was the most inspiring and empowering video out of all three because it really inspired me to be myself and taught me to never be ashamed of myself. It was interesting to see how the design of each prosthetic could transform the mood and ‘personality’ of a person. For example, the spiky prosthetic made Viktoria Modesta looked more edgy and unique.

Neil Harbisson:I listen to color

I thought that this was a very interesting video to watch because it shows something that I have never encountered or seen in my life before, it really opened up my mind. This video is about how Neil Harbisson could not identify colors like ordinary people, therefore his world was entirely black and white until a few years ago when he discovered a device that helps him to ‘listen’ to colors. Whenever the device detects a color, it will make a noise and each color has its own noise. Therefore, if he looks at a piece of work that contains multiple colors, the device will ‘produce’ a piece of music. The most fascinating thing about this video was that this design has became a key component to his daily life and it even became a part of his body. It is a very good example of how technology is benefiting human beings.

Lucy McRae: How can technology transform the human body?

This video is about a ‘body architect’ Lucy McRae and how she likes to merge science and technology with the human body to create a new form of art. She uses a lot of light within her work, for instance, dresses that lights up and electronic tattoos. She creates a lot of work that ‘grows’ from the body, for example the foam.

Conclusion

I realized that all three videos talks about how technology is incorporated into design and our life, helping us to live a better life. It was very inspiring to see how these artists are stepping away from the traditional way of making art and being very innovative.

Assignment 11: Household Object

Assignment 11: Household Object

The aim of this assignment is to chose a household object, could be anything, and draw an orthographic drawing that shows the top, front and side view based on it. The object that I chose is a jar of sleeping lip mask that I use every night. Again, I was not struggling with the drawing itself, but instead struggling with reading and writing the unit. In addition, I only did two views because this object looks the same from the front and side.

Class exercise- orthographic drawing

Class Exercise: Orthographic Drawing

This task was to produce orthographic drawings based on the isometric drawings in the exercise booklet. The task itself was not difficult for me, instead, I was struggling with exchanging and reading the unit because I’m still not used to reading in inches, I don’t know how to read it on the metal ruler and write it out. It is something that I need to practice urgently.

From this, we had to select one of the orthographic drawings above and make a 3D model out of materials such as chipboard, cardboard or bristol paper. I chose to use bristol paper because I have not yet worked with it and I wanted to try using it. For this model, I connected each surface with threads because I wanted to add some color to the model to make it look more playful. To create this model, I first traced out the shape from my laptop with tracing paper, then I labeled each side with a number so that I can refer back to it when I make the models.
