ASSIGNMENT #14 – TED Talks- Art & Design- reflection

Rogier van der Heide: Why light needs darkness

Rogier van der Heide talk was incredibly fascinating. Light is something I notice but not something I appreciate nearly as much I should. Especially the way Rogier van der Heide speaks on.

A couple of powerful things I appreciated in this video is when Heide said, ” people should use the darkness as a canvas.” Heide is implying how as people we should use darkness in our favor. That darkness serves its purpose and contrasts the beauty of light. Heide was very poetic about darkness and light, and a takeaway for my project is not run from darkness but work with it and allow to do its job. Allow it to enhance the beauty of the light.

My life as an outsider |

Hussein Chalayan is an impeccable designer. I have been lucky to have seen his work before. Every time I struck by the beauty that lies within the multi-functional creations he makes. I look up to him because he goes beyond making extraordinary beautiful things; He also has a desire to change the way we use everyday things productively and intelligently. His creativity is refreshing and noteworthy.

Introduction to James Turrell (4:18 min)

James Turrell has the most mesmerizing work. The way he works with light and makes light with the space given in beautiful. Not only does he communicate how power light is and how it gives us perspective but he also exemplifies the message through his work.

How he played with light and color in his work gave me a feeling of peace and serenity while at other times his usage of space, light, and color ignite a sense of stress. This all goes to prove his point of the power of light and how as viewers we must be curious and willing to notice it.
