Auberge x Alta Gracia

Perez Zeledón, Costa Rica

When Alta Gracia opened its doors earlier this year, it became the number one destination in Costa Rica. This hacienda-style hotel welcomes guests with an awe-inspiring view and smiling staff that authenticates Costa Rica’s motto of “Pura Vida”. AltaGracia consists of fifty rooms or “casitas”. The “casita” style accommodations are intimate and warm so that the room truly becomes guests’ home by the end of their stay. Aside from its accommodations, the hotel is equipped with a grand equestrian center, a helipad and airstrip, its own fleet of ultralights, a state-of-the-art Spa, and three different dining options. With more than three hundred acres of land yet-to-be-developed, AltaGracia represents the perfect alliance between the magnificent accident that is Costa Rica’s abundant nature and the polished design of unparalleled luxury demanded by the most critical traveller.

On July 9th, Auberge Resorts Collection announced plans to expand to Central America to manage the boutique hotel located in the agricultural town of Perez Zeledón in the South of Costa Rica. Costa Rican native Alberto José Esquivel single-handedly conceptualized and designed Hacienda AltaGracia. Esquivel has always had a deep connection to Perez Zeledón and believes it is time for this “undiscovered” territory in Costa Rica to be shared with the rest of the world. An avid traveller himself, Alberto Esquivel understands the expectations of any demanding client and plans, for the first time in Costa Rica, to not only meet but exceed these expectations at AltaGracia. The announced partnership with Auberge Resorts seems ideal to launch the luxury [resort into business. “You get to visit a lot of hotels, and you measure the good and the bad and decide whether it is a good project to be involved in. It is very rare that we visit a place that instantly feels magical. [Alberto Esquivel] created a one-of-a-kind place here.” comments John Volponi, General Manager at Auberge.

Before Alta Gracia became Alta Gracia, it merely existed as a small project of four guest houses near my grandfather’s farm that were meant for each of his daughters and son. The project soon grew to include not four but fifty guest houses, later named “casitas”. Additionally, and seemingly out of the blue, a reception, pool and various restaurants were built and the project which was supposed to be an extension of personal property inevitably grew into the hotel it is today. The history behind every aspect of AltaGracia, as well as the strong connection between Alberto Esquivel and the team of locals who helped him turn his dream into a reality is palpable upon arrival.

Experience the otherwise unimaginable lifestyle of Alberto Esquivel himself in Costa Rica’s beautiful mountains that had previously stayed hidden within the clouds. For as little as $425 you can experience the perfect coexistence of nature and luxury.
