Repurposed Trash Project

The trash used in this project was old newspaper, and used tea bags.  Instead of throwing these items away after use, I have used them to create a textured canvas.  Being art students, many of us have art materials, and left over scraps from previous projects.  There are a few art materials used to create the canvas, but they are fairly standard for the art student to have.  Instead of purchasing a textured canvas, why not make your own which will cost less AND be sustainable? 🙂

Materials needed are:

Steps:

  1. Flatten out the newspaper and glue it to the wood with Mod Podge (glue on in layers and scraps).  Wrap the edges of the newspaper onto the back of the wood to avoid air bubbles.
  2. Dampen old used tea bags and dab/brush onto newspaper in varied areas
  3. Break open the bags, and rub tea leaves over the surface-let it dry-brush off some of the leaves (leave some on for more texture)
  4. Once dry, paint a layer of mixed gloss medium and gesso to prime the canvas for painting
