This project was from a fine arts class I took my junior year (2015) called Topics in 3D: Recycle, Rethink. The assignment asked us to look into nature and its natural cycles or other cycles that take place within nature and then to use found materials to represent the cycle we chose. I thought about how we take sand, a natural material on this earth, and heat it up to make glass. The issue is that we can’t reverse this process – glass is stuck as glass. Over years and years glass can be ground back down into a sand-like material by being crushed in the ocean against waves and rocks. So I decided to force this reversal process by crushing glass bottles into a sand/powder. During this crushing process I learned about different qualities of glass, how dangerous glass can be, and the effort it takes to crush glass manually. To represent this reversal process of glass back to sand, I poured the crushed glass I had made into a bottle as if I was doing a sand art project like many of us enjoyed when we were younger.
