Curiosity Journal Essay 2

Black Monday in Poland

2016 was the year when members of the polish parliament tried passing a law that shook people not only in Poland but all over the world.

On the 24th of September 2016 Krystyna Janda, one of the biggest polish film icons posted a facebook post in which she exhorted polish women to fight for their laws and go on strike.

On the 3rd of October 2016 most polish women didn’t work, didn’t attend university, didn’t go to school, resigned from fulfilling their house duties and at 8.30 am started marching thorough the streets of central Warsaw wearing all black and fighting for something no one should have to fight for in the 21st century. They marched from 8.30 am until late night and nothing stoped them, not even the weather. It was freezing cold and pouring rain but that day no one cared about any external factors. It was just the fight for women’s right that mattered.

For a moment Polish women lived in fear of becoming deprived of a basic fundamental human right – having the right to decided  whether they wanted to keep a baby or have an abortion.

Thanks to the citizens from all around Poland, both women and men the government had to give in and didn’t manage to pass the law which would make Abortion completely illegal.

Despite the fact that the law didn’t pass it is still very upsetting that women even those days have to fight for the right to decide for themselves. Every woman should have the right to decide whether to keep a baby or not. It should be a decision made solely by the women facing such a dilemma  because it is her body and it should be entirely her choice.
