On Exactitude in Science Jorge Luis Borges – Interpretation

A map of a singular province was a size equivalent of a city. A map of an entire empire would be a size equivalent of a whole province. After time, such big maps became no longer satisfactory, therefor a map of an empire would be equal in size to the empires actual size and would coincide point to point. The following generations pointed out that such precise cartography wouldn’t actually be needed. I’m not sure that my interpretation of this text is correct but from what I understood the text shows that not everything has to be exact or exactly illustrated in order to function.
