Grace Paley’s Traveling Reflection

The given article, Travelling, by Grace Paley, is an article that depicts a historical moment of cultural bravery through the era of segregation. Through the period of segregation, it was important for humans to stand up for their cultural beliefs. The author’s mother depicted a character of strength and bravery. As the family is traveling, it is important to recognize the troubles that they had encountered. As I reflect over the article, I find a deep appreciation towards the bravery of the mother. The mother represents those in our community who stand up for their beliefs as a voice for others. She represents the power of voice that grows our community to open-mindnesses. The main character in the article also had been affected by the mother’s bravery towards her community. Paley embraces the young child that a nearby mother offers her to hold. This may represent Paley’s embrace towards her cultural background, especially as she disregards the slander of the bystander.
