The project was about making a montage. I visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art and chose one artifact to include in my montage. So I sketched at the museum and scanned it. For the sketch, I used pencil and I added detailed values on one sketch.

The artifact I chose is called ‘The Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer'(modeled ca. 1880, this cast 1922) by Edgar Degas. It’s a mix media sculpture with Bronze, cotton skirt, and satin hair ribbon. The sculpture is on a wooden base. The model of this piece is a girl called Marie Van Goethem. She was a student in the Paris Opéra. This piece exemplifies the pain and stress of a young ballet dancer. Degas has done studies of the model by making many sketches with charcoal and pastel as well as making sculpture of the figure in the nude.

The architecture that is located on the center of the montage is the Palais Garnier. It’s an opera house built for the Paris Opéra.

I was not used to create something by photoshop so it was challenging for me. My first rough piece was too symmetrical so I had to change the composition of all the elements in the piece.  I tried to use various tool in photoshop; I made some parts transparent, I using blend tool to blend two images, and I used brush tool to color in the ribbon on the left. It was my first time to use all these tools which I found challenging at first but now I know how to use them. It was really hard to create good composition and colors, but I learned a lot from it.
