Day 1 Wednesday, Feb 17

Creating an object from my partner’s childhood

.

.

This object is from my partner, Angela’s childhood memory. She told me that she used to have this box where she stores everything she loved. Her favorite color is pink, so I made the box with the color pink. She also remembered that the box had a keyhole and a key so that she could store her loved objects secretly, and safely. I thought this is so cute, so I added a keyhole. I wrote her name on the top to show that the box is just for her.

Day 2, Thursday, Feb 18

Seminar

Peer workshop/dramatic Reading of B1 Memoir Draft

.

.

This day, we read our memoir three times to each other. One, we read our memoir by ourself aloud. Second, we read each other’s memoir aloud. Third, we read our own memoir dramatically. We chose to read it fast. The first time we read our own memoir, it took some time to figure out the details of the memoir. But as we read more, we started to understand the context well and could figure out places that could be more improved. When we read our memoir for the third time, even though we read it so fast, I could understand every context. It was fun and interesting to read our memoir aloud and in the different style.

5 Different kinds of Portrait using drawing

.

For Angela’s portrait, I tried to show different Angela as well as using different kinds of style/material. We had fun using the app which you can add effect or sticker on your face, so I decided to use one of the picutres she took with that app. I thought it will bring some unique style.

Day 4, Saturday, Feb 20

Seminar

Visit an interesting site in NY

Location : Roosevelt Island

We decided to go to the Roosevelt Island because Angela lives there and I had never been there. So it was interesting for me to explore the area. I didn’t even know that there was an island in between Manhattan and Queens. After spending some time at the Roosevelt island, we decided to take the tram since it was sunny and nice. When I first heard about the tram I thought it’s like a bus because my image of the tram is a bus or train, but it was different a cable car. I was surprised at first. We could get in with the metro card like when we enter the subway station. The view of skyscrapers and the river was absolutely beautiful. I took many pictures. It was really interesting to explore different parts of New York.

Day 5, Sunday, Feb 21

Studio

Cook each other his/her favorite meal

Since we are not used to cook, it was hard for us to get started. I cooked noodle for Angela. She told me that she doesn’t have a particular meal that she likes, but she likes Chinese food. So I had figured out what I can make from Chinese food, and noodle was one of the meals that I was confident in making it. I also wanted to make something that she can eat with chopsticks, which I think shows her love of Chinese food. How we struggle to figure out our favorite meal was fun and I felt like I got to know her better through this.

Day 6, Monday, Feb 22

Seminar

A collage of Angela’s day

Anegela's day collage

Angela’s day was she woke up later than usual, so I put some blankets in the collage.  Then she went to her drawing class in the afternoon. Here I put a hand drawing and the logo of Parsons to represent her class. After that, she ate dinner with her friends. So I used many folks to represent her dinner with her friends, and a hand with chopsticks.  The background represents the location of where she spent her day. I didn’t include her mood because her day was all right overall.

Day 7, Tuesday, Feb 23

Studio

Make a gift and write a poem to each other

Untitled-1

.

It was so hard for me to chose what to make as a gift for Angela. My ability to making an object isn’t the best, and I thought I can do something better with drawing. While I spent time with Angela, I saw that she  likes the life in New York as a Parsons student. I also saw her love for Fashion. So I wanted to make something that can help her achieve her goal of being a fashion designer by making a drawing that can represent her life and the beginning of her life in New York.

So in my drawing, I drew Angela in the center to show she is the main character here. I drew Beijing on the upper right-hand side, and NYC on the left bottom side to show her lifetime and the change. This was the one big step towards her dream. Also, I wanted her to get some inspiration or motivation by looking at this drawing by putting the inspiring quote by another designer. As she likes the color pink, I set the background in pink.

Hope she likes it.

Poem: Dream

big city to big city, with excitement and desire

new city, new life, new me

the time passes without any warning

what are we doing in this big city?

The memories kept evoking in me

making me wanting to go back in time

but why did I come here?

to reach my goal

to be a fashion designer

never forget the desire that you had in the beginning

chase your dream

chase it
