About Robbinschilds
Robbinschilds is a New York-based group of two choreographers, Sonya Robbins and Layla Childs. Founded in 2003. Their main works are dance/choreography, however, they often mix dance with different elements such as sound, video and sculpture. They are focused on visually representing time through exploring the relationship between architecture/place, and human interaction. Their investigations have been about symbiosis, doubling, and sharing the authorship. Recent years, they have been focusing more on conceptual questions and ideas.
“I Came Here On My Own” is a video installation represents the idea of ideal man journey myth but with two women ventures the two different journeys which are almost mirrored in the video. This video installation evokes the idea of landscape, gender, and national identity.
What inspires me from their video installation?
In their video installation “I Came Here On My Own”, they explored the idea of alone but with two figures. I think this is unique and questions the audience about the hidden meaning in the video. The technique such as the almost mirroring image of two different journeys by two different people is interesting. I think it’s a great way to represent their idea of alone journey myth, and also, this can catch the viewer’s eyes instantly. The quality of the footage also caught my attention.
I also like the contrast between stillness and slow movement, and the fast movement in the piece. I think this creates this piece unique and interesting.
There are places where there is a sound and places where there is no sound. The sound in this piece is really quiet and slow which evokes this mysterious feeling in the piece. I think the use of the sound in this piece help the viewer to be in the same atmosphere as the piece, so I think I can use this technique in my own piece as well.
