Title: Laocoon (2004)

Artist: Tim Hawkinson

The sculpture was inspired by the ancient Greek sculpture ‘Laocoön and His Sons’. From this sculpture and Hawkinson’s sculpture, there are similarities in composition, and overall shape. The artist also got inspired with the color from the sculpture’s marble, and textures that almost looks like the hair of the sculpture. However, it can also be seen as a salvaged object from the round spherical shape, which evokes a question of perception.  The sculpture is hand-crafted with rubber, foam, paper, wire, and string. The scale is really big, which caught my attention. The contrast between the complex texture and the simple shape is really interesting for me.
