History of Brooklyn Bridge

  • Since 1883, its granite towers and steel cables have offered a safe and scenic passage to millions of commuters and tourists, trains and bicycles, pushcarts and cars.
  • In order to build the bridge, it took 14 years and cost around $ 15 million.
  • During the process of construction, at least 2 dozen people died, including its original designer.
  • It was the first bridge to connect Manhattan and Brooklyn.
  • The opening of the bridge was done with a huge celebration. Not everyone was happy, many Irish didn’t find it good because the ceremony overlapped with one of the birthdays of British Queen.
  • There was a rumor that the bridge would collapse. This rumorcaused a panic happened a week after the opening. There were approximately 20,000 people on the bridge, and twelve people were about to die because of the panic.
  • The Brooklyn Bridge was done building and opened to the public on May 24th, 1883.
  • In order to build the bridge, it took 14 years and cost around $ 15 million.
  • The bridge became a cultural sensation from its opening since it was inspired by many American artists like Georgia O’keeffe, and Andy Warhol.
  • September 1883, the bridge trains started to run which took 5 minutes to cross the bridge. By 1885, over 20 million passengers were carried by the bridge train

Reasons for our choice of the site

Firstly, we found that the Brooklyn bridge has a long and interesting history, its really attractive. Brooklyn bridge connects Manhattan and Brooklyn, both of them are the most famous and are the landmark places in New York City. This bridge is crossing over the East River, which is able to provide us a better background for our narrative. Due to it’s a connection building, our narrative could be a story that has the similar meaning and function. The scenery totally changes from the daytime and the night time which is also interesting to explore. Different time of the day can evoke different emotions in our piece.

 

 

 

Hazuki Uno is a Japanese Student who currently studies Illustration at Parsons School Of Design. She has moved around the world since she was bron in Japan. She has lived in Mexico, Switzerland, Germany and currently living in New York City. Mixture of the experiences that she gained by interacting with people from different cultures, exploring different countries and her own culture are her biggest inspiration for her works.
