In this project, I explored the different type of making plaster sculpture. I wanted this piece to represent strength and willingness. The hand which I made with Alja-safe mould and liquid plaster, represent my hand that is reaching to my goal. I chose to use this way of creating because it can cast my hand in detail, and I wanted this hand to be the main hand in the middle.

The two fists on the side which are growing from the hand in the middle was made with plaster gauze. I put the plastic gauze to cast my hand, and arm. This way of creating allows the cast to be more simple and rough which I wanted to use to represent the support of the main hand. So the two fists on the side are supporting the balance of the main had to stand, which I refer to my family and friends who support me to reach my goal. The gesture of fists represents the strength and support.

The base, I used a real shoe. I wanted this to represent the steps I make when I am reaching my goals. I used the white shoe to have the unity in the piece. But it was challenging for me to stick the hands with this shoe because the fabric didn’t allow the plaster gauze to stick well. In the end, I managed to stabilise the hands on to the shoe but it was the challenging part of this project. I could have used the liquid plaster on the base to have it more stabilise. Another thing that I could have done is, I could sand them so that it becomes smoother and clean.

The process

The challenging part of this project was I have never worked with plaster before. Every process was new for me and it was overwhelming in the beginning. When I was casting my two fists, my arms were stuck with the plastic gauze. I had to break and strongly pull myself out… it was a terrifying experience for me. Getting stuck happened also with Alja-safe because the cast I made was in a small bottle and it was also hard for me to get my arm out of it.

There were many things which were challenging but I managed to create a piece which was how I imagined in the beginning. It was all good experience and I learned a lot from it.
