Eiko Ishioka
Biography
12 July 1938 – 21 January 2012
Eiko Ishioka is a Japanese graphic designer, art director, set and costume designer. She won variety of awards like; an Academy Award in 1992 for Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’, a Cannes Film Festival for ‘Mishima: A life in Four Chapters’, two Tony nominations for ‘M.Butterfly'(1988) and ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark’, and a Grammy award in 1986 for design of Miles Davis’s album ‘Tutu’.
After graduating from Tokyo National Univeristy of Fine Arts and Music, she had worked in graphic design fields and worked for many companies’ advertisements. However she decides to work in worldwide fields. Her first film direction was ‘Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters’ in 1985. She had also worked for theater and circus as a costume designer.
As she was working with broadway shows and many films she lived in Manhattan for decades and her works was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art.
