Bridge 2: Project description

| Bridge 2: Project description |

In this project, I want to look closer to the idea of the transience of the cherry blossom. Japanese people find it attractive by the fact that the cherry blossom only blooms for 10 days during spring time. Japanese find the fast life of cherry blossom flower graceful and really beautiful. So from this idea, I want to focus more on the idea of ‘youth’ which is transience in our life. I believe cherry blossom represents this idea. As I thought about this idea of transience, I came up that performing art is also transient because it only happens at that moment. So I decided to create a video for my final piece.

As I was trying to come up with some ideas which I can use in my video to address my idea. I think I will focus on the idea of ‘youth’ because youth can represent the idea of transience as well. I had few ideas in my head, however, I am not sure what will be the best for my final piece. I want to have time to explore before deciding what to have in the video.

My idea for the video is to use mediums which moves and creates interesting movement such as ink, powder… and I am also interested in soup bubbles. All these mediums are very delicate, move easily, changes and doesn’t last for a long time (in a place). I thought I could use these mediums to show my idea of transience. I would like to represent ‘youth’ by having fast moving images like the youth pass so quick. I want to make sure the image that these mediums create are beautiful since I want to address the idea that youth is beautiful but short, and quick.

In this video, I would like to evoke the sense of anxiety and regret. I am not yet figured out what will be in the video, so I will explore with different materials. Other idea that I can use, is to have water and ink on a material(something like paper) and walk on the busy street to show the uncontrollable speed of time and anxiety of losing youth.

.

Steps/things to do for the exploration

  • Experiment with ink in different colors and different materials(paper, silk, plastic…)
  • Go to Washington Square Park to see the artist who uses powder in his work (this artist is always there when I go to this park )
  • Experiment different movement that ink and powder can create.
  • Create cherry blossom in 3D form with something stronger than paper. Also, try some to make it look wilted.
  • Sketch cherry blossoms in many different seasons. Since cherry blossom has a different appearance in each season, it could be interesting to do some sketches.
  • Go visit Metropolitan Museum to see ink used in different art styles. Look carefully for the different patterns, and lines made from ink.
  • Then imitate some of them by not using brushes, by just moving the material that the ink is on.
