Video work:

‘The Transience of Youth’

In this art piece, I wanted to metaphorically represent the idea of ‘transience of youth’. I got this idea of transience from my cultural object, cherry blossom. The cherry blossom for Japanese people is a valuable and spiritual object and we are attracted to it because of its transient beauty. I linked to this idea of transience with the shortest and beautiful time of our life, youth. So I decided to collate this idea and put it together.

In this video, I wanted to show the anxiety and sad emotion of losing our youth, and time is not something we can control but people still try to stop time to pass fast as it would. I used ink to represent how youth pass rapidly by its self. Ink is perfect for this representation because it creates movement and interesting moves by tilting it or adding ink over some water. I linked the transformation and the fast movement with the idea of ‘youth’. I also used different kinds of paper (watercolor paper, tracing paper, and plastic bag) to represent the experimental time of our life, and I also used many colors to represent different emotions. The glitter represents the dream which is wiped away by black ink  to show that there is not enough time to achieve dreams.

In this project, I learned how to show my ideas, not like a literal way but more an abstract and metaphoric way. I learned how to see an ordinary object in different perspectives to create different object or meaning.
