9 x 12

Watercolor and pencil

Genre: Portrait

These are the series of illustration pieces, which represents cities or countries that artist feels close. Some of them are the places that she lived, and some are the places that she loves. Through this project, she wanted to reflect her life experience of living in different countries as well as finding more about each culture from those places. The subject of each piece is a woman from each city or country with traditional hairstyle filled with modern letterings and colors. This creates a harmony of traditional and modern styles. The figure also shows the different beauty of a woman from different places. The letters in their hair are all name of the cities and areas. She was also very interested in traditional wearing from different cultures, so many of the inspirations of patterns and woman’s wearing come from each culture.

The hairstyle for New York was inspired by 70s hair and the letters and patterns were inspired by graffiti. The hairstyle for Japanese woman was inspired by the traditional style and the letters were from modern signboards. The floral pattern on Mexican woman was inspired by the traditional pattern of their culture. For Germany, the colors were inspired by beer. The pattern on Korean woman’s face was inspired by their traditional door and window decorations. The inspiration for the pattern for Switzerland came from Swiss modern architectures. In each piece, there is a strong contrast of traditional and modern aspects and shapes.
