Core Seminar 1: Studio Assignment 2

Studio Assignment 2

Final artwork and reflection:

I felt as though I made this purely instinctively. However, I think that it does relate to some theory on reflection. The Mirror stage by Lacan was one of the most difficult readings for me to understand, however, I think my work does relate a lot to the discovery of oneself. Though I feel I know myself, sometimes I am able to express who I am through my art.

Summary of mirror stage

The mirror stage by Lacan is about the first development of the ego when the child recognizes themselves in the mirror. The self or ideal-I is the self when seperated from the world. Gestalt is when the image is seen as a whole sum of different parts, similarly, the ego is focused on one part of the world, the self and the mirror stage is when the child sees themselves as a part of the world.

Written Intent

For this I take inspiration from this entire course. Trying to understand theory and apply it to my work. I want to make something instinctively. I want to see what it could be interpreted as based on theory and if that is actually what I meant to do. I was inspired by these quotes by Artists I initially chose to compare: Pablo Picasso and Joel Peter Witkins. I want my work to be about intuition vs instinct. How does the audience interpret it? Was I creating from instinct or what was affecting my decisions?

I have started my research by collecting quotes.

Research

Joel Peter Witkin – “What I have learned in art school is that art cannot be taught. You can learn techniques, but no teacher or school can make an artist. That comes from the deepest self. That comes from long battles with your ego and the honest reshaping of your consciousness.”

Joel Peter Witkin

“If you give a meaning to certain things in my paintings it may be very true, but it is not my idea to give this meaning. What ideas and conclusions you have got I obtained too, but instinctively, unconsciously. I make the painting for the painting. I paint the objects for what they are.” – Pablo Picasso

Intuition or instinct?

I took the quote ” I see life as a photograph” from his video, it reminds me of the Trinh reading about how filmmakers see life from their own perspective, capturing it in a certain way.
