Christopher Breward’s Aphorisms

  1. “Fashion moves in space and time. It shares in the complexity of physics and mathematics, making patterns and networks, forming mazes and constellations. Through its forms we have an opportunity to re-unite art and science and to heal the rift of the two cultures.”

Fashion, as long as we tend to categorise it into the art genre than science, it indeed is a combination of both. Without either one, fashion cannot be complete. Pattern making is the key step in creating fashion. There is intense mathematics involved, as well as thorough thinking of how the garments will effect the wearer’s body. As scientific as it might sound, there are also endless possibilities to take in the artists and creative direction. A skilled designer can use his or her scientific thinking and creative talent to make truly amazing work. I agree with this aphorism very much because as a fashion design student, I see the importance to not only have design visions, but also to have the skill set to make it come to life. With only skills and no art, we are craftsmen. With only artistic thinking and no scientific skills, we are dreamers but not designers.

2.  “Fashion is intensely personal, in the same way that poetry is intensely personal. It is a medium     through which personal stories can be told, memories re-lived and futures foretold.”

Fashion is like poetry. You should feel something emotional when you are wearing it. There is emotions can be evoked through every single detail – touch of textile, stimulations of colours, movement of the garments. There are a lot of pieces in my wardrobe that can bring back certain memories. There are also clothes that are not expensive at all but are very precious to me simply because of the stories behind them. There is a reason why I prefer black, white, grey and neutral coloured clothes because they make me feel safe, and I like to wear exaggerated accessories just to catch the enough amount of attention. Fashion provides us a bank to restore our personal memories and feelings.
