Modern Art History-Personal Reflection

For my modern-connections essay I chose to write about James Turrell, because I found the way that James Turrell incorporates nature and light into his works very romantic. I like art pieces that gives an experience more than giving a predicted outcome, so I like to focus on the viewers experience and guide them through interaction. I’ve also experienced with light as a media to guide viewers into a designated space and time. Below is the installation piece I created inspired by Marina Abromovic’s funeral plans called “The Artist’s Last Performance”.  Working with light is inspiring because it’s a very fluid medium that can lead you to many unexpected places.

I was inspired by how Turrell’s work can  invite viewers into a calm and tranquil space where the pace of time is essentially vague and unimportant. This really creates an unique experience that can be personal to everyone. The pieces intended to create a contemplative and meditative atmosphere. He was raised as a quicker. Turrell calls his art non-vicarious art because it could only be truly experienced first hand. So that all the descriptions and images of the artwork itself is somehow less than the real experience.I think the creative connection between my work and Turrell’s works is that we both uses light and indeterminate space—not objects or images—to extend and enhance perception.
