Monument Valley

The objective of the puzzle game Monument Valley is to get Princess Ida, the avatar character, through levels of mazes in order to reach the end platforms.

Princess Ida can only walk and climb up and down ladders; she cannot jump from step to step or fly or have any other form of movement.  Sometimes crow people will block her way.  She cannot force her way past them, and must find a way around them.

The game was fun.  Much of the fun was in exploring the structures of the mazes and in enjoying the game’s unique and pleasing visual style.  Going through mazes got a little boring after a few levels, when I got used to the game’s mechanics and visuals, but it was still able to capture my attention by introducing new ways of manipulating the structures.  Figuring out new ways to move around was also difficult and frustrating to the extent that I found the solutions online instead of trooping through.  The later levels started to get repetitive and not as fun, which could be improved by having more complex mazes.

I still ended up liking the game so much that I bought the extension.  It would be interesting to see how the game plays out if we played from Princess Ida’s view instead of in isometric view.  Then, we would have to move to certain places in order to reach the rotation levers.  This variation could be tedious, however.
