Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial: Beauty

This cork cone, designed by Daniel Emma, Daniel To, and Emma Aiston in 2013 for designer furniture brand Wrong for Hay, has a sleek, smooth shape conducive to its purpose as desktop storage for pins and other sharp objects.  The material, cork, is self-mending, allowing minimum thoughts about wear and tear, and the angled shape of the object assists the user in gripping and pinning tools.

My first impression of this object was that it was ugly; what was something so dull doing in an exhibition about beauty? But as I observed the piece, I was able to appreciate its streamlined shape, its simple, no-nonsense material, and its probable usefulness, and I came to understand that beautiful things come in many different forms.
