Game Modification: Embrace of the Gummy Dice

Aside from Neopets in general, Attack of the Gummy Dice is my favorite game. I have played it for many years. I love it so much. It doesn’t have a timer or speed element, it doesn’t require me to rotate the screen and get dizzy, and it looks nice. The method of play is methodical and calming. I often played this while watching television or listening to podcasts to help me concentrate and not fall asleep. This game has been here for me probably since around the time I discovered the internet in 2005. It is the only game I play on a regular basis and the only game I can stand to play for hours on end, so of course I had to use it for this assignment.

Anyway, I tried playing it while disabling the block rotation function, but that didn’t change normal gameplay very much. I could still pass levels easily. It came to me at 4am that I could reverse the goal of the game; instead of clearing the space, I could fill it up instead.

Filling up the space, especially on the first level, is really difficult. You only have three colors. When five blocks of the same color touch, they are destroyed. I played this way for a few hours. It made me cry. I think the highest I got was about 3/4 of the way up the board on the first level.

You can play this way on the later levels, which have the feature of randomly colored blocks popping up everywhere after each turn. The later levels can also have up to seven colors of blocks, blocks that can’t be destroyed, and blocks that destroy everything. They also start with more blocks on the board. These qualities make the later levels a lot easier in terms of the modified version of play, although it can get a little frustrating with the pop-up blocks. I think the first level is the hardest.

Gummy

The original game is Attack of the Gummy Dice, which is on Neopets.com, and can be played for free here:

Sign up is not required to play.

It is a match the colors to clear to board flash game.  When 5 or more of the same color dice touch, those dice disappear/are destroyed, and the player scores points.

The goal is to score enough points to get to the next level. The only way to lose this game is to make a stack of dice so high that it reaches the top of the dice area, which is 10 dice.

The player may rotate, move, and drop the dice.

MODIFIED RULES:

Fill up the entire 10 by 10 units grid.  In order to do this, the player must score as few points as they possibly can.  This means that they must not let 5 or more blocks of the same color touch.  The player loses when they score enough points to get to the next level.

The player may keep on playing through the later levels; however, these levels introduce more colored dice, which makes the modified game easier.  A new dice will pop up after every drop of dice, which may make the modified game trickier.
