Reflection of “Exhibitionism: 50 Years of The Museum at FIT”

As I was entering the exhibition, it was not a surprise that the whole space is black, again. It is not just the Museum of FIT, most of the shows today are using black as their first option. Taking example from the class, the Chineses traditional wearings were being exhibited in a whole black space with mirrors, even though the ancient  China would never use black to color the space because it symbolizes death, and people back in that time only used copper as mirror not the kind we have today. Seems like the curators prefer to give up on the right context but go with the right aesthetic for viewers today, in other words, the exhibit is trying to catch, not to give, meaning no more education, just take more photos and posts.

Back to the exhibit, it was a pleasure for me as a fashion student to see the pieces from our textbook stands in front of us. However when I saw the big name pieces like Rick Owens, CDG…that were made and donated in recent years, and we are talking about the 50 years history of the museum, that becomes a weird flex, and I couldn’t help wondering again that is that out of the reason of using the celebrities  in fashion to sell more tickets.
