Memento Response

Even though I honestly not a big fan of thriller, and actually quite afraid of it, but this movie really attracts me and differentiates from others. Memento is a 2000 American neo-noir psychological thriller film written and directed by Christopher Nolan. Basically, there is a man called Leonard, who is suffering anterograde amnesia because of the accidental attack in his own house, wants to take a revenge on the killer, who killed his wife and let him suffered this serious damage. Since he can only remember the things that happen within about ten minutes, he has to memorize stuffs by tattooing, taking notes, snapping photos, making charts and so forth. One day, Leonard picked up a phone from unknown, he explained why he killed the assassinators, and yet one of them ran away. He believed the other killer is John G. Therefore, he started a series of research. Before the incident took place, Leonard said he was an insurance investigator, and knew a client, Sammy, who has exactly same symptom as he does. Sammy’s wife had diabetes mellitus, and asked Sammy to inject insulin for her, also to confirm her husband really has the symptom or not. She just kept asking Sammy to inject it to prove that he does not have the symptom. Unfortunately, she died due to the excessive dose in the end without her expectation. After this call, Leonard remembered this incident so deeply that he even tattooed “Sammy” on his hand. In the process of researching, Leonard met Teddy, a police officer that is following a drug dealer–Jimmy. Teddy used Leonard’s memory loss to help him following Jimmy. A bartender also Jimmy’s girlfriend, Natalie, knew this circumstance, and making use of Leonard in the same way to kill her enemy Nodd. Nevertheless, Leonard killed Teddy in the end. In fact, Teddy has already helped Leonard to find the other killer, and killed him already. The story was all made up by Leonard himself, and Leonard is Sammy, they are the same person. In addition, his wife’s death was not because of the assassinators, but thanks to Leonard, he injected too much insulin to his wife. After watching this movie, I was really surprised the unexpected end and trembling at the same time. It was too scary and complicated for me, and it is mixing linear and non-linear methods together, which is even harder for me to understand. Nevertheless, I really like the material and the elements inside the movie, it is kind of creepy but attracting at the same time, and I could not even pause it. I believe it is a pretty outstanding movie, and can see why it got 8.5 out of 10 on Imdb, really appreciate it.
