Intro to Fashion Studies #1

Christopher Breward’s aphorisms from his forward to Fashion Studies:

  • “Fashion can be about confirmation, of self and others. But it is also about anxiety, ambiguity and worry. As an aid to understanding psychological complexities it is unsurpassed.”

The way fashion relates to an individual, much can be revealed about the character, maybe in their state of mentality. Fashion begin the choice of the individual allows so much potential for psychological connection between the self and what they wear. I agree with this aphorism because of its statement in the alliance of fashion relating to human internal complexities. In a humanity of diversity in all aspects, an individual is a single and unique fraction whose fashion responses to their certain personality, way of thinking, and style. This aphorism refers that internal complications are outwardly expressed and fashion is one mode. I think there is a misconception that fashion is just a tool for outward appearance, yet the purpose and meaning behind it runs deeper in the mind.

  • “Fashion is intensely personal, in the same way that poetry is intensely personal. It is a medium through which personal stories can be told, memories re-lived and futures foretold.”

Fashion design concepts are driven by personal background and experiences. The products that are produced are a response to how the designer assess society by giving their interpretations. I agree that the process is similar to the same way of poetry, but I would argue further. Fashion and poetry are forms of artist expression, forms of art from artists. Many fashion designers have considered themselves firstly as artist over designers. Fashion and art are closely related in the sense of coming from a personal area from the artist’s life.
