Topic Proposal

Section 1:

For the 50 images that I found, they all share four common themes, which are the topics about sustainable, fashion and technology, art and story telling and organic shapes. They are also the topics that related to my previous projects. I did lots of project and essay about system and society as well as fashion and technology. So the selection of these 50 images is based on the topics that were created from my precious project.

Section 2:

Why do more and more people start to care about fashion in sustainability?

– Fashion begins to become one of the main factors that affect the environment.

How does the technology involved in fashion?

-Technology is shaping the future of fashion.
-New Technology has changed the way of retails and textile.

Why is technology important for the fashion sustainability?

-There are many problems and pollution that created the old fashion industry so we need a new way to change those problems.

How or in what way does the technology help or impact the fashion sustainability?

-High-tech creates a low-pollution fabric
-New technology changes the fashion production line and decreases the pollution that produces during the making process.
-On the other hand, because of the faster developing of the online shopping, it, therefore, decreases the costing of fashion business and therefore lowers the prices of clothes. For the result, it’s in this way promoted the fast fashion.

 Section 3:

1) What you are writing about – I am working on the topic of fashion sustainability and technology.
2) What you don’t know about it- Since many of my previous projects are related to the topic of fashion with sustainability and fashion with technology. So I want to find a way try to connect this two thing together. Since we are living in the 21st century so everything that we have right now can’t leave with technology, technology help to improve our lives. So does fashion, more and more fashion designer start to related fashion with new technologies? It can create a new area that we haven’t seen and thought about in the past time. It, therefore, can be the main source and key to deal with the fashion pollution, which is a popular topic in the fashion area nowadays. So I want to know more details it, for example how people connect these two together what steps do they take in the past? What may they plan to do in the future?
3) Why you want your reader to know and care about it- Since fashion, clothes are the things that we need to wear and to dress up every day. So everybody is throwing a lot of clothes every year. It, therefore, cause the main landfill problem. Also, fast fashion is another main reason for the pollution problem. We with the rapid development, more and more high-tech began to be used in the fashion field. But every cloud had a silver lining; by using the high-tech in fashion can be either a good thing or a bad thing for fashion sustainable. So in the essay, I will analyze both sides and want to raise people’s awareness of fashion sustainability.

Section 4:

For this topic, it is difficult to do an interview, so I will do some image and object analyses. I will search for some pictures or use the 50 images that I already found that using the technology in fashion to do the analysis. Also, I since my topic is about fashion technology and sustainable system, so I may also doing some research and find the some fashion fabric or textile that made for the new technique that are environmental friendly. Based on those objects or images I will write the analysis.

Scholarly sources

 Book 1:

Ewel, J.J. Agroforestry System(1999). Kluwer Academic Publishers.45: 1. https://doi-org.libproxy.newschool.edu/10.1023/A:1006219721151

Ewel’s book provides a thorough examination of natural systems as models for the design of sustainable systems of land use. The author describes some new models including channel productivity into outputs of nutritional and economic importance; maintain adequate diversity to compensate for losses in a system simple enough to be horticultural manageable; manage plants wand herbivores to facilitate associational resistance and not associational susceptibility and use perennial plants to maintain soil fertility, guard against erosion, and make full use of resources. The books also including many Berish CW and Ewel JJ’s article as references, for example, Root Development in Simple and Complex Tropical Successional Ecosystem, Herbivory in complex and simple tropical successional ecosystems, Root biomass and surface area in three successional tropical forests and so on.

I chose this book as one of my sources is because many of the pictures that I found are related to plants and sustainability. This book talks about the new model for the design of sustainable systems of land use, which I believe the content of this book is really matched with the photos that I found.

Book 2:

Seymour , Sabine. Fashionable Technology: The Intersection of Design, Fashion, Science, and Technology. Springer Publishing Company, 2008.

Seymour’s book gives an explanation of the role technology plays in a fabric or article of clothing as well as a compact survey of the theory that involved. Besides, this book also introduces over 50 well-known designers, research institutes, companies and artists with their latest, unpublished project and a survey of their work to date like Philips, Burton, MIT Media Lab, XS Labs, Hussein Chalayan and so on. It is a book that must be read by those of whom wish to know everything about fashionable technology.

I chose this book as one of my sources is because as a fashion student, I am always really interested in combining my design pieces with the new technology. The new technologies are always very inspired me with my design. Also, many of the 50 pictures that I found are related to the technology so I believe it must be a very useful book for me to read.

Book 3:

Parrish, Patrick. Tech Trends. Vol. 50. Kluwer Academic Publishers, August 2006.

Parrish’s book talks about the concept of design as storytelling, he begins the book by asking the question of “What is the most critical skill required by an instructional designer”. And in the book, he discussed the topics about “Design as technical problem solving: a dead end”, “Storytelling in the design process”, “Uses of design stories”, “Design stories in design communication” and so on. By introducing those topics, he gives us the details about how to write and improve your design story. What does storytelling mean to design and how it can help to improve our design process.

I found this book is really useful because as a design we always did to know how to tell the stories that make our design more meaningful and let others know us better. And many of the photos that I chose are the pictures that I found to have some stories that hidden behind that makes me really want to take a deeper look and find out.

Book 4:

Fletcher, Kate. Sustainable Fashion and Textiles. Routledge, 2012.

Fletcher’s book Sustainable Fashion and Textiles brings together the first time information about lifecycle sustainability impacts of fashion and textiles, practical alternatives, design concepts and social innovation. It also challenges the existing ideas about the scope and potential of sustainability issues in the fashion and textiles. It gives the forward-looking pictures; drawing ideas of systems thinking, people needs, local products, slow fashion as well as the knowledge of materials.

It is a very useful book for my further research since many pictures that I found have something to do with the sustainable fashion material and sustainable system. So I believe this book will provide me with more information and inspiration.

Book 5:

Chimero, Frank. The Shape of Design . Frank Chimero; 1st Edition edition , 2012.

The book The Shape of Design is a book that about the creative process and the intersection of storytelling, craft, and improvisation. It strives to investigate the opportunities of exploring the terrain, and it values the everyday concerns of designing. Through the book, we notice that we use design to close the gap between the situations we have.

Many of the photos that I find have some relationship with the organic shapes. I believe that all the designs are from daily lives and should serve people. Many designs get the inspiration from nature so do I. So I believe that this book can teach me a lot about how to get the inspiration from daily lives and how to convert into designs.

Primary sources

 Interview:

“Sustainable system for second hand clothes.” Interview by Beacon’s Closet Manager.

This is an interview video that I made for my Design Studio 2 project about fashion sustainable system. The interview was hold in a vintage shop, Beacon’s closet. The interview was hold for the manager of this store and we ask several questions about how can recycle and resell those second hand clothes that help the environment. What actual steps do they take to help deal with the problem that created by fashion system. I believe that this interview can give me some basic sense about the problem that create by the fashion system and what steps does the fashion people already take and how much awareness did people raise for those fashion pollution problem. That will be really helpful and valuable research for my final essay.

This is a new fabric that recovered from cotton linter and cupro by Japan’s Asahi Kasei handles like rayon but breathes and regulated body temperature like cotton. Many luxury brands like Donna Karan and Maison Margiela already adopted and used it in their design. This is one of the new environmental friendly fabrics that created by involving in new technology. I believe it is a good source can be used in my final essay that helps to prove my themes.

This is another new fabric called Ecotec, made in Italy by Marchi& Filfi, it is the first and so far the only cotton that uses a traceable and Oeko-Tex and Global Recycle Standard. It used existing resource, reduces landfill waste, a third-party-conducted life-cycle assessment estimated that Ecotec consumes up to 56.6 percent less energy, uses 77.9 percent less water, and generates 56.4 percent fewer greenhouse. So I believe it is another very good sample that can be used in my final essay that prove how the new technology and in what way does it really helps to deal with the fashion pollution problem.
