From Christopher Breward’s foreword to Fashion Studies, I selected two aphorisms. The two aphorisms are “Fashion is not necessarily spectacular (though it often conforms to the theory of the society of the spectacle), it can also be demotic, ordinary, mundane, routine and humble. It is the stuff of the ethnographer and the anthropologist” and “fashion can be about confirmation, of self and others. But it is also about anxiety, ambiguity, and worry. As an aid to understanding psychological complexities it is unsurpassed”. I chose these two aphorisms due to their unique angel towards today’s fashion world. Just by reading the two quotes, I felt the meaningfulness, and I totally agree with both of the quotes. Though the two quotes seem to be about different topics, their ideas share a similarity. The two aphorisms are both projecting that fashion should be more about diversity that fashion can be anything. Fashion does not only symbolize a positive and glamorous attitude in life. The first aphorism indicates fashion can be demotic and ordinary, which is also how I understand fashion. Not only evening gowns are considered fashion, but daily wear can also be considered fashionable. There is high fashion and fast fashion and etc. However, the different categories should be all included in fashion. The second aphorism expresses that fashion displays much more than self and others. The way I understand “but it is also about anxiety, ambiguity and worry” indicates that fashion can also show about social issues or environmental issues. Fashion can be used as propaganda for one’s beliefs and statements. Another reason that I was attracted to these two aphorisms is that my design philosophy and style are similar to these ideas. I always want to create more humble collections and maybe not always presenting a happy atmosphere throughout my garments. Also, I want to be able to reveal or give out solutions to social issues.
