I created this map of intersectionality. My interpretation of intersectionality is that it creates overlapping and interdependent ideas. The 6 words I choose are gender, nation, class, sexuality, race, age and place. These are the 6 words I think represents a person. It brings out a person’s personality. Just like in the reading the author writes “…having the agency to assert or articulate one’s own ways of being and becoming” (Kaiser p 21). Though the six words seem to be very different, it shares common and intersects with each other. Gender effects sexuality, nation effects place, age effects class and etc. Each category effect one’s dressing style. Older age people will be more willing to wear traditional customs, where younger age people are more willing to wear fashionable clothes. Different nations and backgrounds have different customs. Cold places and warm areas definitely have a lot of differences in garments. Even though many countries share similarity with China and their traditional custom were affected by Chinese traditional custom, there is still a difference between each country’s traditional clothes. The garment will not be able to define as the same. This shows overlapping but also distinct of the 6 categories. One’s outfit can be possible to show that person’s gender, nation, class, race, age, sexuality, and place. However, people can also hide the six categories with what they are wearing. For example, in school, if there is a school uniform it hides a student’s personality. Every student is demanded to look the same to create unity. Police and fireman’s uniform can also do the same thing. It is better for certain jobs to have a uniform, where Uniform brings down gender, nation, class, sexuality, race, age and place. Clothes can be used to present one’s personality and it can be also used to turn down one’s personality.
