Exhibit Review : “Jacob A. Riis”

A documentary of New York City’s poverty.

New York, reputation for fanciness, accommodates a large population that contains different ethnicity and hierarchy.

The exhibition of Jacob A. Riis, displayed with photographs, books, and videos. Every exhibit expatiates time, material and background of its content. The documentary cover where and how people lived under a unbearably filthy condition and who were these people.

Compare to “Glided New York” which was also showed at the museum, “Jacob A. Riis” forms a strong contrast between the life of wealthiness and poorness.

There is one piece that really shocked me. It is called “5 Cents a Spot”

Quote:”In a room not thirteen either way slept twelve men and women, two or three in bunks set in a sort of  alcove. The rest on the floor…A baby’s fitful wail come from an adjoining hall-room, where in the semi-darkness there recumbent figures could be made out.”

Unbelievable.
