The connection between Studio and Seminar actually happened very early. One assignment in the Seminar studio needs us to see through facades and find the stories and background behind the objects. It’s quite interesting that some of the objects have stories or histories actually showing opposite with their appearances. For example, I find Qipao (which is a traditional Chinese gown dress) origins from male’s clothing and some of Qipao may be designed for erotic charisma. It kind of inspired me to do strong contrast in my work. That’s why I chose the vivacious color palette for my DNA-structure patterns. Also, I chose two high contrast color for my final design.

The research I did about identity and fashion for Seminar class also give me lots of inspiration for the garment I made. I find a quite interesting phenomenon that some of young ladies spend most of their money in fashion. They are really losing their shirt for one shirt labelled a designer’s name. At first, I felt that is quite ironic, and I didn’t believe someone had nothing to eat can show confidence. However, I change my tune when I put “fashion” as the key word, instead of “identity”. Suddenly, I realized that fashion is so powerful because it can be a language for identity. It can speak loudly about what kind of person you want to be or what kind of life you like. It’s so powerful and universal that no one, for today, still just view fashion as simply clothing. Therefore, I hide some strings in my garment. When you wear it, you can give the dress different volume and shape by tie them together in your own way. Just like identity, it changes every moment when your attitude changes. So does my garment.
