PROJECT NAME:

       “Put On Your Relationship”

1 What did you make and why?

I made a garment which can be worn by different people for different occasions. It’s reversible with one side stiff cotton and one side satin. I made it for reminding people the value of one garment and how we treat our garments means a lot for our environment. Furthermore, I tried my best to make the garment as a zero-waste one, by using the zero-waste pattern to cut the fabric and the yarn to trim the hem. All in all, this piece is made for against the over-consumption and waste issues in the fashion industry.

2 In what ways will this object/design be useful to you over 50 years of change? How will it be resilient (used in more than one way etc. and/or encourage social resiliency through its usage)?

First, this garment fits both for me and for my boyfriend, which contains the memories and stories of us. In this way, I’ll cherish this garment a lot. And in the design, I made the ability to adjust to different figures, which gives the possibility to fit different people in one garment. And by choosing the white color, I can do further graphic design on this piece along with the situations during the 50 years.

3 What specific event(s) of environmental change will it help you adapt to or address?

This project connects people together to show how powerful fashion can be in our social life. During the environment change, people feel disconnect not only with nature but also with each other. So by making this garment, I want to bring the community united power to my design, and make people stand together to face the environmental issues.

4 What materials did you use, given what you have learned this semester about changing resources and material availability?

I use cotton and cotton satin and yarn in this project. All of them are not dyed to any specific color. Because the dying process wastes lots of water and causes serious environmental problems in the fashion industry. So by doing this piece, I want to reflect the environmental issues in the fashion industry and find the solutions for that. That’s the reason and the value for this zero-waste design to aware people of those issues behind, instead of just focusing on the appearances.

5 How does your object offer function and aesthetics over time? How does it fulfill the Long-Life Design criteria to the best of your ability?

I made the adjustable design on shoulders and the front closure, which both works for the function to fit on different people and the aesthetic to make the design unique at the same time. Furthermore, the potential graphic design on this piece can be another interesting aspect offering the resilience design. This piece meets all the ten standards in Long-Life Design criteria. It has the ability to fit different people which shows the Function. The design is considered with the zero-waste pattern which meets the Planned Production. It’s safe to wear and leads people to be aware of environmental issues in the fashion industry. I made with great passion and it can be potentially re-designed by customers for a graphic pattern, which is a backup plan if it got some hard-remove stains.
